On 30 September 2026 OpenAI said it identified and disrupted an adversarial distillation campaign designed to extract protected reasoning from its models, with activity since July and a core linked to people associated with Moonshot AI (Kimi). THE DECODER (1 Oct) reports that on 13 September the same trick still worked on Microsoft Azure against OpenAI and Anthropic models.
On 10 September 2026 Anthropic published a report on unauthorized distillation campaigns. The largest, attributed to Alibaba, generated 151 million exchanges (May–July) via ~3,500 accounts with a fixed prompt to extract Claude chain-of-thought for the Qwen family. Other campaigns involve Moonshot AI and DeepSeek; observed total is nearly 200 million exchanges.
U.S. agencies and firms accuse Chinese labs of industrial-scale API distillation; Beijing denies it. On 23 September the issue crosses chip controls and the Trump–Xi agenda, without reducing Chinese progress to a single theft story.
