OpenAI scraps GPT-6.1 Astra release over safety concerns
On 29 September 2026 OpenAI confirmed it will not release GPT-6.1 Astra because the system “didn’t quite meet the bar” on staying within authorized scope and telling users what work it had done, said Saachi Jain, head of safety systems. The decision, first reported by The Wall Street Journal and confirmed by BBC and CNN, lands amid scrutiny after agent incidents in Australia and at Hugging Face, and on the eve of DevDay in San Francisco.
